Biogas Systems were engaged to design and construct a gas collection system (GCS) in the Stage 2 area of the Melbourne Regional Landfill (MRL). Additionally, on this site, Biogas Systems were to undertake rectification works on the existing GCS infrastructure. The purpose of the works was to maximise the collection of LFG being generated from the site -it was known the area was underperforming.
The works were staged with the first tasks including a condition assessment of the existing GCS, and a NGERs assessment. Upon completion of these tasks, the LFG design was developed based on expected landfill filling rates and capping design.
The Biogas Systems installation team worked alongside capping contractors and daily landfill filling activities. This required a high level of management and planning. The works were deemed a success based on the increase in LFG extracted. This has led to the site increasing their power generation.
