Project Description
The large residential development involved the redevelopment of rural land adjacent and a large municipal landfill in Greater Sydney Area, New South Wales. As part of the development requirements a Landfill Gas Risk Assessment (LFGRA) was to be undertaken to assess the potential risks to the proposed dwellings, as well as assess potential groundwater impacts.
The LFG assessment involved a combination of spot and continuous gas monitoring on bores installed along the perimeter of the site. The data was used to undertake the LFGRA coupled with a Conceptual Site Model (CSM). This information was then in turn used to design a gas mitigation system to ensure the long-term protection of the residential dwelling adjacent the closed landfill.
The main disciplines undertaken included the following:
- Continuous and spot gas monitoring
- Drilling works and monitoring well installation
- Development of a Conceptual Site Model (CSM)
- Landfill Gas Risk Assessment (LFGRA)
- Design of a LFG mitigation system
The site has a number of unique aspects that presented both technical and financial challenges. Through the use of continuous monitoring equipment, a robust LFG risk assessment was achieved which in turn informed the design basis of the gas mitigation system.
The main disciplines undertaken included the following:
- Continuous and spot gas monitoring
- Surface gas emission assessment
- Services investigation and field investigations
- Drilling works and monitoring well installation
- Development of a Conceptual Site Model (CSM)
- Landfill Gas (LFG) Risk Assessment
- Odour modelling
- Design of a LFG mitigation system
